Earthshore: Save Our Ocean For Our Children

Cleanup crews working on Baseco Beach, Philippines

The ocean sustains life on Earth as we know it. As you read this, consider that two out of every four breaths you take are fueled by the ocean. Our weather patterns and water cycles depend on the ocean’s natural rhythms and currents, and it serves as a vital protein source for over three billion people worldwide. The basic needs for our very existence rely on the health of our seas—yet our ocean is in peril, and we are responsible.

I would like to draw your attention to the waters surrounding the Philippines, a phenomenal marine wildlife hotspot often referred to as the “Amazon of the Seas.” Located within the Coral Triangle, the Philippines supports over 500 species of coral, providing vital habitats for diverse marine life. This region is also rich in mangroves and seagrass beds, which offer food and shelter to threatened and endangered species such as the Leatherback Turtle, Dugong, and Irrawaddy Dolphin.

This spectacular diversity is under direct threat from the massive amounts of plastic and pollution flowing into the Philippine seas. The Philippines currently faces the highest rate of ocean plastic pollution on Earth, with over 356,000 metric tons entering the water every year. A significant driver of this crisis is the "sachet economy"; single-use plastic sachets are often the only affordable option for residents living below the poverty line. Compounding this issue is a lack of sufficient waste management services.

This pollution is contaminating local beaches, endangering communities, and killing wildlife through ingestion and entanglement. It is systematically degrading essential, fragile habitats. Earthshore is a nonprofit dedicated to uniting global communities to preserve coastal ecosystems and protect future generations. Guided by the vision “Save Our Ocean For Our Children,” they lead beach cleanups, community outreach, and youth education to reduce marine debris and promote environmental stewardship.

In 2026, Earthshore aims to:

  • Remediate the top 5 most polluted beaches in Metro Manila.

  • Organize 24 large scale beach cleanups.

  • Provide employment for 35 residents per cleanup.

  • Train 840 volunteers.

  • Educate 3,600 Filipino children on ocean conservation.

In a time when environmental issues can feel overwhelming and out of our hands, Earthshore has chosen action, collaboration, and commitment toward measurable change. They have partnered up with local businesses, government, and most recently the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the Philippines to address the ocean plastics pollution problem. They are engaging the local community and inspiring the next wave of environmental stewards.

In 2026 the first beach that Earthshore will be addressing is Baseco Beach. We encourage you to follow their mission and be a part of the Global Earthshore Movement!
